A snowing appearing wave cascades over a long boat.

“The Great Wave off Kanagawa” by Robert MacDonald

“The Great Wave off Kanagawa” painting interpretation by artist Robert MacDonald

“The Great Wave off Kanagawa” is an interpretation of a woodblock print by the Japanese artist Hokusai. It was published sometime between 1829 and 1833. The image depicts an enormous wave threatening off the coast of the town of Kanagawa (the present-day city of Yokohama) while Mount Fuji is seen in the background.

In This painting, I took the liberties of translating it into a painting. One subtle yet artist change is placing Mount Fuji under the wave’s tip – drawing attention and balance.

Another alteration, and probably more notable, is that instead of three ships I only painted one. To me this gave more focus and clarity to the painting.
