Two Wanted Men is a conceptual painting that imagines the 1969 Columbia Studio A session where Bob Dylan and Johnny Cash recorded “Wanted Man.”
MacDonald captures the moment’s emotion: Dylan in quiet anticipation, Cash as the solemn counterpoint, and the radiant microphone symbolizing the convergence of these two iconic voices. With echoes of Van Gogh’s energy but marked by MacDonald’s own style, the painting transcends mere portraiture.

The original painting is now exhibited in the Columbia Studio A lobby—a setting that welcomes students, artists, producers, and visitors to one of Nashville’s most storied recording spaces. The installation connects music history and visual art, allowing Two Wanted Men to stand as both tribute and contemporary reflection on the enduring creative spirit of Studio A.

From Original Painting to Limited Mixed-Media Edition
Alongside the original, MacDonald Gallery introduces a Limited Mixed-Media Edition (30″ × 20″, edition of 75). Each piece begins as an archival giclée base on canvas for fidelity, then is individually overpainted by Robert MacDonald—renewing color, light, and surface texture so that every example stands as a unique mixed-media painting. Each is floater-framed like the Studio A presentation, fitted with a metal-engraved plaque, and accompanied by a Hahnemühle COA (hologram) and full provenance from MacDonald Gallery.
Future collector announcements will introduce the 24×18 Collector’s Edition, Open Edition Canvas, and 8×10 Collector Print—released in stages to complement the Studio A unveiling.
