Description
Artist Statement: “I have been to Café Terrace in Arles, France many times. I painted it as a “realistic impressionist” oil painting while there. Here I painted an “expressionistic abstract” version.
Café Terrace at Night is based on Van Gogh’s Café Terrace at Night. The essence of the original artwork is captured through an array of dynamic shapes and vibrant colors. The scene is dominated by swirling, interlocking forms that suggest the outlines of the café, its terrace, and the bustling street beyond. The rich blues and glowing yellows that Van Gogh so famously used permeate the composition, creating a vivid contrast that brings the scene to life.
The café’s structure is hinted at with geometric patterns, where blocks of deep blue and golden yellow suggest the walls and windows. The terrace is a lively medley of circular and angular shapes, evoking the tables and chairs where patrons might be imagined conversing and enjoying their night.
The sky above, a deep, swirling blue, is punctuated with patches of luminous yellow, representing the stars and lamps, casting an ethereal light over the entire scene. The cobblestone street is suggested through a mosaic of varying blue tones, with occasional yellow accents hinting at reflections and shadows.
Overall, this abstract rendition retains the nocturnal ambiance and lively spirit of Van Gogh’s original, distilling it into a play of colors and shapes that evoke the same sense of warmth and nocturnal wonder.
