American Pie tips its hat to Peter Max’s late-’80s flag works but makes the iconography Mira’s own—stars, stripes, an apple, and a slice of pie rendered in crisp Pop color and motion. The familiar symbols land immediately, playful and bold, which is exactly the point: this is an American emblem reimagined as a bright, accessible conversation piece.
The reveal: what looks like a wood frame isn’t a frame at all. Mira paints a full trompe-l’œil surround—complete with gentle “wear”—directly onto the canvas and even carries the illusion around the sides. Most viewers assume it’s an actual frame until they step in close (and often touch the edge) and realize the entire “frame” is paint. That aha moment is built into the work, turning the piece into both image and object.
